A newly fabricated sign indicates the upcoming stage of a hotel development situated on the former National Guard Armory property along Commonwealth Boulevard. The project’s collaborator, Anchorstone Advisors, is collaborating with InterContinental Hotels Group to settle branding decisions and secure the required site approvals.

He noted that the exact hotel brand remains undecided for public disclosure.

“Consistent with the brand’s announcement requirements, the specific hotel flag will be publicly identified at the appropriate stage of development.”

What’s Your Sign?, a Martinsville-based business, produced the sign. It promotes over 85 “comfort-focused” rooms, a free hot breakfast, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and a pool. The signage lists Anchorstone Advisors as the developer, working alongside the Martinsville EDA.

No particular hotel brand is named on the sign, nor does it disclose a construction timeline, budget estimate, or projected opening. It merely states the developer’s name and outlines the intended amenities.

Joey Martin, who owns the sign firm and serves as chair of the Martinsville Planning Commission, shared that the sign was finished via a social-media update. “You’ll see this What’s Your Sign? made in Martinsville up soon at the build site,” Martin wrote.

Addressing a Local Need for Lodging

State delegate Eric Phillips, representing Henry County, stated that the undertaking meets a persistent demand for more accommodations in Martinsville. He highlighted that high-quality lodging bolsters local enterprises and enhances tourism.

Shift in Plans from Earlier Proposals

The parcel attracted notice as a possible hotel location in 2023 when the state classified the former National Guard Armory as surplus and transferred the deed to the municipality. Municipal officials requested development bids, and the City Council backed a proposal from Kayak Hotels Group to build an 80-room Holiday Inn Express on roughly 3.5 acres at the western portion of the site.

Kayak’s chief executive, Kalpak Shah, informed councilors that residents were requesting lodging options in Martinsville. He outlined a four-story hotel featuring breakfast service, a fitness center, a pool and a meeting space. Shah projected expenses between $10 million and $12 million, anticipated 23 jobs, and expected roughly $223,000 in yearly municipal tax revenue.

The July 2024 city agenda recorded that Kayak asked for a further 60-day period to finish due-diligence and design work, moving the cutoff to October 25. The developer informed officials that it had located a modular builder in Colorado and required extra time to finalize plans.

A new hotel concept appeared in 2025. In December, the council authorized the conveyance of the remaining segment of the approximately 8-acre armory site to the EDA. A contemporaneous report quoted Payne stating that the transfer was required to complete a letter of intent with a prospective developer for a dual-brand hotel after the earlier deal collapsed.

The number of rooms shown on the newly produced sign aligns with the prior proposal.
