Red Carnation Hotels has secured EarthCheck Silver certification across its entire global network, encompassing properties in the UK, Ireland, Europe, and South Africa. The luxury chain attained this recognition after a 14-month effort, during which an independent audit examined 10 performance metrics across all its hotels.
Local teams at each property oversaw progress tracking to maintain uniformity in sustainability measures. Two London hotels, The Rubens at the Palace and Hotel 41, recorded the portfolio’s lowest emissions intensity at 3.29 kg/GN. Eight locations across the group reported zero landfill waste.
The certification follows the company’s Bronze status in 2025, representing an upgrade in environmental and social performance. The process involved collaborations with initiatives such as The Clink Restaurant at HMP Brixton, youth development programs in Cape Town, and the food waste optimization platform Winnow.
Michelle Devlin, vice president of sustainability, emphasized that sustainability is not treated as a separate program but is integrated into all operations.

The certification builds on prior sustainability work, including waste reduction programs and emissions monitoring. While some hotels concentrated on water conservation, others prioritized cutting emissions and eliminating waste. Each property assigned dedicated staff to oversee and enhance performance metrics.

Visitors might observe changes like locally grown ingredients or conservation initiatives, but the most significant impact comes from unseen efforts, such as data analysis and strategic partnerships, that guarantee lasting progress.
